Why we’re riding to Wembley – and why we need your help

Rugby League Hall of Fame member Andy Gregory is one of many players we have supported through difficult times in recent years: RL Cares is proud and privileged to be able to give help to the sport’s heroes when they need it most.

As Andy outlined in his moving interview in our recent newsletter One In, All In, “It’s great to see organisations like RL Cares championing the cause of player welfare. Players need support, both during their careers and when it comes to deciding what they want to do next.

“I wish RL Cares had been around when I stopped playing.”

RL Cares was established in the aftermath of the death of Great Britain hooker Terry Newton in 2010: since then, referrals by the charity to amazing organisations like Sporting Chance have turned countless lives around and spared many other families from certain tragedy.

Our work comes with a price tag, however, and that’s why fundraising is an important aspect of what we do: without donations and sponsorship we wouldn’t be able to provide the levels of support our players need.

On Monday August 19, 23 people, including 10 current or former Rugby League players, will set out from the evocative George Hotel, Huddersfield, bound for Wembley Stadium and the Coral Challenge Cup final.

Over the next five days, the 2019 UK Red Ride to Wembley will cover 340 gruelling miles and climb 18,000ft across the Pennines, Peak District, Cotswolds and Chilterns, avoiding tarmac wherever possible on a route that follows canal towpaths, green lanes, forest trails and bridleways.

The route will test every rider to the limit and create memories that will last them a lifetime. More importantly, the ride will generate the funds we need to not only change lives for the better, but to save them as well.

We know that everyone has lots of demands on their hard-earned cash, and that we can all suffer from compassion fatigue, but the Ride to Wembley is really important and we really need YOUR support.

If you’re able, please help our cause by sponsoring any of the riders on the 2019 UK Red Ride to Wembley: you can find the riders’ Justgiving pages here.

Sponsoring them is quick and easy, and what’s more, if you agree to GiftAid then the taxman adds 20 per cent on top of your donation at no extra cost to you.

Thanks in advance for your support. It means a lot.
