Wembley winner Mick Cassidy gets ready for the Cup final ride of his life

Rugby League Cares is delighted to announce that Mick Cassidy has become the latest former Rugby League international to join the UK Red Ride to Wembley.

Mick, 44, played over 450 first team games for Widnes and Wigan during a 17-year playing career that also brought him caps for Great Britain, England and Wales.

He is currently the assistant coach at Super League club Widnes Vikings and looking forward to saddling up for the epic five-day adventure that will involve cycling off-road for over 300 miles from Old Trafford to Wembley Stadium.

The fundraising ride for RL Cares leaves Manchester on Monday August 20 and arrives at Wembley on Friday August 24, the eve of the 2018 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup final.

“It’s going to be an experience of a lifetime and something of a journey into the unknown for me, even though I regularly cycle from home to work,” said Mick, a Challenge Cup final winner at Wembley with Wigan in both 1994 and 1995.

“I have nothing but admiration for the work Rugby League Cares does, especially the support it provides for players when things go wrong.  Current and former players are gaining access to vital support on a daily basis from the charity and I’m really pleased to have this opportunity to help.

“It’s also going to be good spending a week in the company of some old friends and rivals who I played with and against.  That so many ex-players have put their hand up to help RL Cares demonstrates how important the charity’s work is.”

Mick will join former Hull FC captain Gareth Ellis, ex-Castleford prop Andy Lynch, retired Kiwi international Robbie Hunter-Paul, former Leeds and Great Britain centre Chev Walker and Nathan McAvoy, the ex-Bradford, Wigan, Salford and England three-quarter on the Ride to Wembley.

The ride is sponsored by UK Red Fire and Security and specialist engineering company Spec Ltd, and supported by the Oddballs Foundation and RL Cares Business Club partners All Sport Insurance.
