UK Red and Spec Ltd saddle up for the 2019 Ride to Wembley

RUGBY League Cares is heading back to Wembley!

And once again we’re doing it the hard way on an epic 340-mile off-road cycling challenge that is guaranteed to push all 25 participants to the very limit.

Leeds-based UK Red Security and Fire Systems have signed up as title sponsors of the charity’s biggest fundraiser for a third successive year, with Wakefield-based engineering specialists Spec Ltd again on board as the event’s principal partner.

The 2019 UK Red Ride to Wembley will set off from outside the George Hotel, Huddersfield, the historic birthplace of Rugby League, on Monday August 19 and over the next five days take a circuitous route to the Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium, avoiding paved roads wherever possible.

Full details of the route will be revealed at the official launch of the 2019 UK Red Ride to Wembley at the Brownlee Centre in Leeds on Tuesday May 14, when the star-studded line up of riders will also be revealed.

Last year’s Ride to Wembley raised more than £30,000 for RL Cares and featured a host of Rugby League legends, including Wigan favourite Mick Cassidy and Gareth Ellis, who had led Hull FC to Wembley glory in both 2016 and 2017.

Chris Rostron, the Head of Rugby League Cares, said: “The UK Red Ride to Wembley has proved itself as a hugely successful event, both in terms of fundraising and the way in which it raises the profile of the charity and the work we do.

“We are also proud that the ride consistently achieves its aim of giving all participants a first-class experience by providing them with a challenge that creates memories to last a lifetime.

“We are delighted both UK Red Security and Fire, and Spec Ltd are again involved and are looking forward to working with both companies to make this year’s ride a success for everyone involved.”

Kevin Walton, the Managing Director of UK Red Security and Fire Systems who has cycled to Wembley on the ride for the last two years alongside his fellow director Dean Bettison, said: “It’s great to have the opportunity to continue our association with such a brilliantly crazy adventure and maintain our support for a charity that does so much good work throughout the sport of Rugby League.

“There are times during the ride when you question your sanity, but there’s nothing like the euphoric feeling you get as you ride up Wembley Way on the eve of the Challenge Cup final after five incredible days on the bike.

“UK Red Security and Fire are again proud to sponsor the Ride to Wembley, even if some of the more sensitive parts of mine and Dean’s anatomy might have different ideas!”

Ian Needham, the Managing Director of Operations at Spec Ltd, said: “As we are avid Rugby League fans, we are delighted to support RL Cares again this year. Having completed the ride last year, we have decided to join in the fun again, we must be mad!

“RL Cares is a fantastic charity and we know the difference they make with the Rugby League community which is why raising events such as Ride to Wembley is so important.”

All funds raised from the UK Red Ride to Wembley enable RL Cares to continue making a positive difference to the lives of people involved at every level of Rugby League.
