Castleford’s Andy Lynch is heading back to Wembley in 2018 – with or without the Tigers!
The Super League club’s Player Welfare Manager is the second high-profile figure to join the UK Red Ride to Wembley, an epic 300-mile off-road cycling challenge from Old Trafford to the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup final in August to raise funds for Rugby League Cares.
Andy will join Hull FC’s Football Manager Gareth Ellis and 18 other riders on the gruelling five-day trip – provided Castleford aren’t involved in the Wembley showpiece on Saturday August 25.
“I’ve not done anything like this before and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Andy, who retired last season after making an incredible 452 Super League appearances with Castleford, Bradford Bulls and Hull FC.
“I’ve kept myself fit since I finished playing but though I do a bit of running, cycling isn’t my bag and I know it’s going to be tough.
“We met this week to talk about plans for the ride and to learn more about the route. My first thoughts were ‘What have a let myself in for?’! However, I love a challenge and hauling my body across the Peak District on a mountain bike and on to London, avoiding roads wherever possible, is going to be just that.
“I have seen at first hand the good work RL Cares does in the sport: the support they provide for players, including the help they give to ease the transition into retirement, is first class and I’m really pleased to have this opportunity to help.
“Obviously, if Cas get to Wembley I’ll be with the team for the week but whilst it would be disappointing for the club to miss out on the final, joining the Ride to Wembley is a brilliant consolation!
“Castleford fans are among the most generous in the game and I’m sure they’ll get behind me with sponsorship on the Ride to Wembley.”
Chris Rostron, the Head of RL Cares, said: “It’s great that Andy has pledged his support for the charity and we’re looking forward to him joining us on the UK Red Ride to Wembley.
“One of the things that players miss most of all when they retire is the banter that comes from being part of a close-knit team: we can promise Andy, Gareth and all the riders plenty of that in a week they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”
