Bob will be tackling the 300-mile four-day ride along Ireland’s rugged southern coastline, on behalf of RL Cares’s long-standing partners Slater Heelis, who have been offering expert and friendly legal advice to the rugby league playing community since 2021.
A former Ireland captain who represented the country on 26 occasions, Bob also enjoyed a distinguished club career, making over 400 senior appearances with Leigh, Widnes, Halifax, Wigan, Toronto and Newcastle.
He will head back to the Emerald Isle alongside his RL Cares colleague Gareth Ellis, the former England and Great Britain international, plus a group of around 20 riders who will include representatives of Rugby Players Ireland, the organisation that delivers player welfare services to rugby union players across Ireland.
“I’m really looking forward to what will be an incredible challenge and am honoured to have been asked by Slater Heelis to be their representative,” said Bob. “I’d like to thank them for putting their faith in me, not least because I would never describe myself as a cyclist! I haven’t even got round to sourcing a bike yet!
“It’s going to be tough but I’m sure the craic will be brilliant and, more importantly, I’m going into this knowing that all the funds we raise are for a truly fantastic cause.
“In my role delivering community and health programmes like Offload and Movember Ahead of the Game I see at first hand on a daily basis how powerful the work of RL Cares is.
“Hopefully rugby league fans will get behind the ride and help us continue to make a positive difference to the lives of people across our communities.”
Slater Heelis partner Charlotte Beck said: “We’re proud of our partnership with RL Cares and delighted to be able to support Bob as he takes on this incredible challenge on our behalf.
“The work RL Cares does to support rugby league players is outstanding and we feel privileged to be able to help the charity by supporting Bob on the Wild Atlantic Adventure.”
The Wild Atlantic Adventure starts in Cork on Wednesday June 26 and finishes four days later in Limerick, and will involve the riders taking on some of the most challenging on-road terrain that Ireland has to offer.
The ride takes place in association with Boiler Central, a Wakefield-based central heating company who supply, instal and service central heating systems across the UK.
