Rugby League mourns Mick Martyn, Lion Number 239

The Rugby League Lions Association has sent its condolences to the family of Mick Martyn following the sad loss of the former Great Britain and Leigh second row. He was 81.

Mick was a member of the 1958 Ashes-winning Lions tour when he scored a remarkable 23 tries from 16 appearances in Australia and New Zealand, a record by any tour forward.

Mick's death comes just over a year after the passing of his younger brother, Tommy who was a Lions tourist in 1979.

"It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Mick Martyn and our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time," said Lions Association secretary John Ledger.

"Mick's amazing try-scoring feats on the 1958 tour remain the stuff of legend. Leigh, and the sport of Rugby League, have lost another great player and a man who was respected by all who knew him."

Mick Martyn was Lion Number 239.
