Ride to Wembley raises a staggering £13,000 – and counting - for RL Cares

Rugby League Cares would like to thank everyone who supported the UK Red Ride to Wembley last week, an amazing adventure that has so far raised over £13,000 for the charity.

Twelve riders completed the full 320-mile off-road route between Headingley and Wembley: Keith Senior, Paul Highton, James Elston, Paul Hensall, Wil Woan, Amy Derham, Chris Rostron, Kevin Walton, Dean Bettison, Sarah Rostron, Emma Goldsmith and John Ledger.

They were joined for two days each by three other riders: former Great Britain and Leeds centre Chev Walker rode the first two days and Rugby AM’s Alex Simmons and Jimmy Bray rode on Thursday and Friday.

The fundraising target of £10,000 was smashed long before the riders pedalled up Wembley Way on Friday afternoon and with the deadline for donations ending this Friday, the total is set to increase still further.

All proceeds from the ride will help RL Cares continue its important work to enrich the lives of people involved at every level of the sport in a myriad of ways, including player welfare and education support; health and wellbeing; heritage; and cultural partnerships.

Chris Rostron, the Head of RL Cares, said: “The UK Red Ride to Wembley has been a hugely successful venture for the charity and our thanks go out to everyone involved, from the riders themselves and the support crew, to sponsors and everyone who has made a generous donation.

“It was a very tough challenge for everyone involved and the riders were really tested over the five days: it was also an incredibly rewarding experience that created memories and bonds that will last a lifetime.

“The feedback from all the riders has been universally positive and the Ride to Wembley is something we will definitely be looking at doing again next year: the process of planning for 2018 has already begun!

“We couldn’t have raised so much money without the support of all our sponsors and we are extremely grateful for the support of UK Red Security and Fire, Halfords, Yorkshire Boilers, Club Doncaster Foundation, Environmental Services Design, All Sport Insurance, Infinity Works, Oddballs, and NL Van, Truck and Car Hire.

“Like all successful teams, we had a brilliant support crew behind us on the Ride to Wembley and I would like to thank Nigel Johnston, Brigid Power and Nick Goldsmith for all their hard work and commitment.”

The final total raise will be tallied at close of play on Friday – if you would like to support the UK Red #Ride2Wembley please donate to Rugby League Cares via www.justgiving.com/rugbyleaguecares or sponsor any of the riders involved www.justgiving.com/companyteams/L2W2017
