Join Kevin Sinfield to celebrate 120 years of the Challenge Cup

It cost the princely sum of £60 but the dreams and legends created by the Rugby League Challenge Cup over the last 120 years are priceless.

On Saturday April 29 – 12 decades and five days after Batley and St Helens contested the first ever final – the Challenge Cup and its fantastic ability to create lasting memories will take centre stage in Huddersfield on a day of sporting celebration.

Challenge Cup 120 takes place at Heritage Quay within the main campus at the University of Huddersfield and is guaranteed to stir the soul of every Rugby League supporters. And what’s more, admission is free!

Heritage Quay is the home of Rugby League Cares’ official archives where memorabilia, documents and other items from the sport’s long and proud history are documented and stored.

The day will feature not one but two Challenge Cups: the original trophy that was presented to Batley at Headingley in 1897 after their 10-3 success, and the trophy presented to current holders Hull FC, who were victorious at Wembley last August.

Fans will have the rare opportunity to take selfies with both trophies side-by-side and take in a historically significant collection of Challenge Cup memorabilia, including medals, shirts and rarely-seen photographs.

One of the highlight of the day will be the presence of Kevin Sinfield MBE, a two-time winner of the Challenge Cup as captain of Leeds Rhinos who will speak about his Cup memories in the afternoon.

Other speakers are historians Stuart Sheard and Professor Tony Collins, the world’s foremost authority on the sport’s history whose published works include The Oval World: A Global History of Rugby; Rugby League in the 20th Century; and 1895 and All That: Inside Rugby League’s Hidden History.

The event runs from 10am until 5pm: for more information, including details of where to park, please visit www.heritagequay.org/events
